SEASON 6 EPISODE 4: CONTROL

Baz is here! And he is definitely someone very familiar with control. That’s our theme this week as we read chapters 28-35 this week.

Poor Baz is starving because he was kidnapped by numpties. Luckily his punk auntie Fiona was there to rescue him. Simon is, of course, weirdly relieved to see him but can’t admit it, so he just gets mad instead. Baz, now that he’s back, can tell us what we’re all dying to know: how he feels about his Chosen One roommate. (He’s got it bad. We sympathise.)

This episode was recorded on 19 February 2022.

Show notes

This week we’re reading chapters 25-35 through the theme of control. If you’d like to read along with us, you can find the full breakdown here.

Meg the Dog, instagram darling - follow her here.

A small black dog with grey hair around the eyes is standing on the beach

Listen to John Green discussing being a hospital chaplain here (be warned: this is worth a listen just on its own, but bring tissues).

We do pick on Fiona a fair bit for not being intersectional. We wish she’d read some Kimberle Crenshaw! Find out more here.

Queen Elizabeth at her husband’s funeral, all by herself. Whether or not you like monarchy, the British royal family, or this group of people in particular, you have to admit this is super sad.

The Commissar Vanishes by David King - find it here.

More here on Warm Bodies (recommended)

And The Great (NOT recommended) here.

Read more about proprioception / sensory issues.

And more here on Grand Designs.

You can find out more about Planet Earth here (big fans).

Wiki here for Hamilton (musical) (his paternal grandfather was a laird, which Outlander would have Jenn D believe is Kind of A Big Deal.)

Read more about How to Catch a Frog by Heather Ross.

And more here about Maus by Art Spiegelman.

Here’s an article about the string of, um, incorrect baptisms.

And, finally, CAKE!

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.

Marginalia Pod is hosted on Podbean and available through the usual podcasting places.

Thanks for listening! Next week, we’re reading Chapters 36-44 through the theme of ideology.
