SEASON 6 EPISODE 1: COPING

It's finally here - we're off to Watford with Simon Snow! We're reading Carry On by Rainbow Rowell for season 6 and we have a lot of feelings so brace yourself. Our foundational theme is expectations, which will be the theme for the whole trilogy. We kick things off reading chapters 1-9 through the theme of coping this week.

In this section, Simon is on his way back to Watford School of Magicks for his final year. We also meet Penelope Bunce, his smart and talented and super cute best friend. Agatha, Simon’s girlfriend, turns up and they pretend everything is fine. (It’s not fine.) The Mage tries to talk Simon out of staying in school, and it all very nearly goes badly. And someone named Lucy is trying very hard to get a message across…

This episode was recorded on 29 January 2022.

Jenn D is all about the Oxford English Dictionary and EtymOnline.

Read more about vulnerability hangovers.

Here is Jenn D’s oven risotto recipe.

Jenn D is sad that the Charlotte Bronte thing is apparently fake (read about it here), but still thinks that it’s an interesting way to think about this version of Simon Snow. :)

Euan Morton! A+ narration of the Carry On Audiobook.

Breaking Negative Thinking Patterns.

Jenn D would like to direct you all to this handy-dandy page about proprioceptive sensory needs and notes that in her (extremely unprofesh) opinion, Simon Snow falls into the category of “kid who likes rough play who gets viewed as aggressive”.

Read the Rumi poem, The truth was a mirror, here:

The truth was a mirror in the hands of God. It fell, and broke into pieces. Everybody took a piece of it, and they looked at it and thought they had the truth.

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and tangata whenua of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.
