SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD: CLOSURE & ARROGANCE

We’re watching one of our fave films this week, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs the World!

Here’s the blurb (it does not do the film justice) - Scott Pilgrim is a twenty-something slacker who plays bass for the scrappy indie band Sex Bob-Omb, falls in love with an American girl named Ramona Flowers, and realizes that he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her... in a universe that behaves like a real-life video game.

Our themes were closure and arrogance, though we kept it fast and loose this time round!

This episode was recorded on 17 December 2022.

Show notes

The film is based on a comic series by Bryan Lee O’Malley - find them here.

Edgar Wright also directed Hot Fuzz (Jenn D’s most and best recommended) - more here.

Read all about Kieran Culkin here - we stan!

And of course, more on Succession here

And finally, check out this article on the music of Scott Pilgrim.

We’re taking a short break and then we’ll be back with season 9 on 9 February, reading Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell. We’re returning to the foundational theme of expectations, the full theme list will be up soon!

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and mana whenua of Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.
