ROMEO + JULIET: PASSION & FOLLY

We’re so thrilled to share this one shot of one of our favourite films - Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. Our themes this week were very on point, folly and passion. This film is a frenetic intertextual dream with a banger soundtrack and we hope you enjoy revisiting it as much as we did!

This episode was recorded on 25 September 2021.

Show notes

This is of course a transformative work of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

Read more about bullet journaling (bujo) here.

The Red Curtain Trilogy refers to three of Baz Luhrmann’s films - Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge.

Kym Barrett - read more about the costume design on this film.

You can read more on the soundtrack here and here.

And here is an essay that breaks down the intertextuality of the film.

Alfredo Michel Modenessi has noted that in watching Luhrmann’s film, ‘the viewer is assaulted with signs but is as helpless to decode them as Shakespeare’s fated protagonists’, yet this response is certainly part of the point. Luhrmann’s entire world is not designed to be immediately interpreted; it is designed to be experienced.

Jen V loves the Globe.

John Leguizamo is an amazing Tybalt.

And Harold Perrineau is a revelation as Mercutio.

Mercution in Romeo+Juliet places his foot on the table and says "I care not"

We stan.

You can read more here from Harold Perrineau on the film.

We’ll be back next week with season 5, reading The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater through the foundational theme of connection. We are so looking forward to this one - we love this series.

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where this episode was recorded - the Guringai and Darug people, and the Whadjuk Noongar people.

Our intro and outro music is by the excellent Scott Buckley. Check him out here.
